Sabrina Zhang (b. 2004, Iowa City, IA) received her BFA in Painting with a concentration in Literary Arts and Studies in 2026 from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she was awarded the Florence Leif Award (2026). Her practice considers printmaking and painting as reciprocal processes that blur the autobiographical and fictional. She draws from public and personal photographic archives, recontextualizing and reconfiguring found images, art history, film, and literature, tracing moments of contradiction, dissonance and anxiety within diasporic memory and identity. Her work grows out of the many tenets of observational painting and drawing, a constant negotiation and rejection of early lessons about representation and “truth”. Through repetition and replication, these objects become generic. Layers, pressure, and blur create indistinguishable boundaries between beginning and end, complicating temporality and allowing history and future to exist simultaneously. Between material and subject, her work wanders between certain and uncertain, repair and disarray, fact and fiction.
She has participated in group exhibitions at Memorial Hall, RI, Woods-Gerry Gallery, RI, Bowen House Gallery, RI, the Fleet Library, RI. the Goethe-Institut, MA, and the Providence Art Club, RI. Sabrina currently manages the Print Shop at AS220 Community Studios, and lives and works in Providence.
